Solidarity is a Trotskyist political party in the Republic of Ireland. It was founded in 2015 as the successor to the Anti-Austerity Alliance, an electoral alliance established by members of the Socialist Party.[1] The party identifies itself as a revolutionary socialist organisation in the tradition of Vladimir Lenin, Rosa Luxemburg and Leon Trotsky.[2]
Solidarity campaigns on issues including public ownership, workers' rights, housing and opposition to austerity. Since 2015, it has contested elections alongside People Before Profit as part of the People Before Profit–Solidarity electoral alliance.[3]
Marxist-Leninists criticize Solidarity's adherence to Trotskyism, arguing that its political programme rejects the historical experience of socialist states and the Marxist-Leninist conception of party-building.
History[edit | edit source]
The Anti-Austerity Alliance was established in 2014 by members of the Socialist Party during the campaign against water charges and austerity.[4] In 2015, it formed the Anti-Austerity Alliance–People Before Profit electoral alliance for the 2016 general election.[5] The organisation adopted the name Solidarity in 2017 while remaining in alliance with People Before Profit.[6]
