People Before Profit (PBP) is an Irish Trotskyist-led political party active in both the Republic of Ireland and the North of Ireland. It was founded in 2005 as the People Before Profit Alliance by members of the Socialist Workers Party (now the Socialist Workers Network) together with community campaigners.[1] The party describes itself as socialist, eco-socialist and anti-capitalist. It campaigns on issues including public housing, healthcare, workers' rights, Irish reunification and opposition to austerity and NATO. Although it presents itself as a broad left-wing party, its leading political tendency is the Socialist Workers Network, the Irish affiliate of the International Socialist Tendency, a Trotskyist international founded around the theories of Tony Cliff.

People Before Profit represents the Cliffite tendency of Trotskyism. Marxist-Leninists reject the International Socialist Tendency's theory of state capitalism, which denies the socialist character of the Soviet Union and other socialist states, regarding it as a revisionist departure from Marxism-Leninism.

History[edit | edit source]

People Before Profit was founded in October 2005 as an electoral alliance. It expanded during the financial crisis of 2008 and later entered the People Before Profit–Solidarity electoral alliance with Solidarity. Today it holds seats in Dáil Éireann, local councils and the Northern Ireland Assembly.
