Situationist International

From ProleWiki, the proletarian encyclopedia
Guy Debord, the founding figure of Situationist thought

The Situationist International was a decentralized art collective consisting of Libertarian Socialists, Anarchists, and various Left Communists whose art was inspired by the writings of Guy Debord, most specifically his work on The Spectacle, defined as "...a social relation between people that is mediated by images."[1] The Situationists used their art in an attempt to create "situations" whereby the spectacle is pulled back to allow those participating to authentically communicate and express themselves, using techniques like détourment, the vandalism of advertising and commodities in order to create new art. The Situationist International was dissolved in 1972, after the failure of May 68 left only a few members.[2]
