Mehdi Ben Barka (1920 – disappeared 29 October 1965) was a Moroccan politician who founded and led the National Union of Popular Forces (UNFP) from 1959 until his assumed murder in 1965. A socialist, Barka was a major progressive figure in the Global South, helping organize the Tricontinental Conference, and was a vocal opponent of both French imperialism and the reactionary Moroccan regime that he was exiled from.

On 29 October, 1965 Barka was accosted by French policemen and was never seen again. The secret operation to murder Barka was carried out by a joint force of Moroccan, French and Israeli intelligence with the involvement of the latter being kept secret for decades afterwards. Barka's disappearance caused a major scandal in France and significant upheaval in the Israeli government as outrage rippled throughout the Global South.[1]
