Juan Evo Morales Ayma is a Bolivian politician, trade union organizer, and former cocalero activist who served as the 65th President of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019. Widely regarded as the country's first president to come from its indigenous population, his administration focused on the implementation of leftist policies and combating the influence of the United States and multinational corporations. Ideologically a socialist, he has led the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party since 1998.

In 2018, Morales gave a speech at the United Nations in which he denounced US imperialism.[1]

His fourth elected term was interrupted by a US-backed smear campaign by the OAS to challenge the electoral results, which later proved to be baseless.[2] The campaign culminated in a 2019 US-backed colour revolution which succeeded and installed Jeanine Áñez as head of state, creating a military dictatorship until elections in 2020.[3] In her first week in power, Áñez signed a decree giving impunity to the military. In November 2019, security forces killed over 20 peaceful protestors and injured hundreds. Her supporters burned the indigenous Wiphala flag and attacked indigenous people.[4]
