Chester Alan Arthur (October 5, 1829 – November 18, 1886) was a Statesian politician who served as the 21st president of the United States from 1881 to 1885. A Republican, Arthur served as the 20th vice president under President James A. Garfield from March to November 1881, assuming the presidency after Garfield succumbed to his wounds following his assassination.

Arthur's ascendency was controversial as Garfield's assassin, Charles Guiteau, explicitly declared his motivation to be for Arthur to become president, thus causing Arthur to spend his presidency trying to avoid controversy. But he also acted in the interests of U.S. imperialism, rebuilding the Navy after the Civil War and passing the Chinese Exclusion Act, forbidding the migration of Chinese people for 10 years.[1]
