Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was a Statesian politician and military officer who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Previously he served as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1864 to 1869, leading the Union to victory in the Statesian Civil War in 1865.
Grant reversed the worst of Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction policies, following a path more similar to Abraham Lincoln, but he still prioritised politics over protecting the rights of newly freed slaves. His administration was also notorious for corruption scandals, and although Grant was never implicated himself, he would consistently defend his corrupt officials.[1]
