Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808 – July 31, 1875) was a Statesian politician who served as the 17th president of the United States from 1865 to 1869. He briefly served as vice president to Abraham Lincoln in 1865, and assumed the presidency following Lincoln's assassination towards the end of the Civil War. Johnson also served as governor of Tennessee from 1853 to 1857, war governor from 1862 to 1865 and a senator for Tennessee from 1857 to 1862 and again briefly in 1875 before dying in office a few months in.
Jackson, an outspoken racist and alcoholic, was chosen as vice president by Lincoln to appeal to national unity, but upon Lincoln's death Johnson completely reversed the somewhat progressive direction of Lincoln's government. Johnson did all he could to block Reconstruction efforts, make life harder for black people and pardon Confederate officials. This led him to clash frequently with Congress with the latter overruling presidential vetos a record 15 times and by the end of his reign Johnson was considered a president in limbo.[1]
