Millard Fillmore (January 7, 1800 – March 8, 1874) was a Statesian politician and lawyer who served as the 13th president of the United States from 1850 to 1853. A former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Fillmore served as vice president from 1848 to 1850 and succeeded Zachary Taylor as president upon his death. He was the last Whig president, and the last to be part of neither party of the modern corporate duopoly.
Fillmore's presidency focussed on the unresolved issue of a slavery compromise continued from Taylor's presidency, which Fillmore decisively supported. Fillmore passed the Compromise of 1850, which gave up many concessions to the slave states, most notably the Fugitive Slave Act, and Fillmore's aggressive implementation of it increased the power of the slave owners.[1]
