The Spanish–Statesian War was a inter-imperialist war between the United States and Spain lasting from April to August 1898. Taking advantage of the independence struggles of Cuba and the Philippines, the U.S. declared war on Spain with the goal of conquering Spanish colonies in the Caribbean and Pacific. Formally the beginning of the war was blamed on the sinking of the Maine as Spanish sabotage even though it was either an accident or a false flag.[1]

The war ended with the Spanish transferring Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the U.S. with Cuba declared nominally independent under U.S. military occupation. The Statesian betrayal of the Cuban and Philippine rebels would lead to Cuba becoming a neocolony of the U.S. until 1959 whilst the Philippine people would be slaughtered by the U.S. in the Philippine–Statesian War. The Spanish Statesian War was a major landmark in U.S. imperial history and was considered by Vladimir Lenin to be one of the conflicts which heralded the start of the imperialist age.[2][3]

Campaign[edit | edit source]

On May 1, George Dewey's fleet easily defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay, and U.S. forces took over Guantánamo Bay in June.[4]:190 From there, the USA launched its occupation of Puerto Rico.[1]

Spread of US colonialism[edit | edit source]

After quickly defeating the Spanish, the USA colonized Cuba. The USA made Cuba give up Guantánamo Bay as a permanent US outpost in exchange for US troops leaving the rest of Cuba.[1] In addition to the aforementioned nations, the USA also colonized Guam, Wake Island,[4]:174 and eastern Samoa.[4]:189
