Georges Eugène Sorel (2 November 1847 – 29 August 1922) was a French syndicalist inspired by thinkers such as Karl Marx and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. A controversial figure, Sorel inspired both Marxists (such as Antonio Gramsci) and Fascists alike through his idea of myths in the struggle for socialism. To Sorel, myths are inherent to any movement as a unifying ideal. Sorel believed the general strike was the unifying myth of the syndicalists, believing it wouldn't matter if a general strike were to break out or not, only that the syndicalists rallied around the idea. These ideas were later incorporated into corporatist and bourgeois nationalist theories to synthesize Italian fascism by Giovanni Gentile and Benito Mussolini.
