Augusto César Sandino (18 May 1895 – 21 February 1934; born Augusto Nicolás Calderón Sandino) was a Nicaraguan revolutionary, founder of the militant group EDSN, and leader of a rebellion between 1927 and 1933 against the United States occupation of Nicaragua. Sandino drew units of the United States Marine Corps into an undeclared guerrilla war until Statesian troops withdrew from the country in 1933.
After meeting with Nicaraguan president Juan Bautista in 1934, Sandino and five companions were accosted by the Nicaraguan National Guard on the orders of Anastasio Somoza García and were executed. Sandino became a lasting symbol of Nicaraguan resistance against imperialism, and his political legacy was carried on by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) which would eventually overthrow the Somoza dynasty in 1979.[1]
