John Tyler (March 29, 1790 – January 18, 1862) was a Statesian politician who served as the tenth president of the United States from 1841 to 1845. He briefly served as vice president in 1841 before the death of William Henry Harrison in April after a month in office caused him to become president. He was the first vice president to succeed to the presidency and the only president to be kicked out of their party whilst in office.

Tyler's early reign was chaotic and he constantly fought with his own party, vetoing many Whig bills, which culminated in his entire cabinet resigning other than Daniel Webster, his secretary of state, and later his expulsion from the Whig party. Tyler was also an outspoken racist and supporter of slavery and settler colonialism, which was compounded by him being the only president to later join the Confederacy.[1]
