Subhas Chandra Bose (23 January 1897 – 18 August 1945) was an Indian revolutionary and anti-colonial leader who sought to liberate India from British rule through armed struggle. He is best known for founding the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army)[1] and attempting to secure India’s independence by allying with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan during the Second World War. Although he collaborated with the Axis powers, Bose also expressed admiration for the Soviet Union[2] and envisioned a hybrid political system combining elements of fascism and socialism—a position often described as National Bolshevism.[3] In 1939, he founded the All India Forward Bloc as a breakaway faction of the Indian National Congress, presenting it as a socialist party with strong nationalist tendencies. This party still exists today. While a controversial figure due to his wartime alliances, Bose remains an influential and contested leader in the history of India’s independence movement.
