Arghiri Emmanuel (June 7, 1911 – December 14, 2001) was a Greek (and later naturalized French) Marxist and economic theoretician. He is best known for founding the theory and systematic study of unequal exchange. Emmanuel was born in Patras, Greece, just one year before Greece entered the Balkan wars.[1]

Revolt against a right-wing government[edit | edit source]

In the 1940s, the allied powers attempted to install a right-wing Greek government in Cairo, Egypt. Emmanuel took an active part in revolting against this installation, and on April 4, 1944, he and other soldiers on five navy ships attempted a mutiny. This mutiny was ultimately unsuccessful; eleven seamen were killed, others were wounded, and some were taken prisoner, including Emmanuel. Emmanuel and his comrades were sentenced to death, but Emmanuel was granted amnesty in 1945, and he was sent to Sudan and kept in a British prison camp. While in the prison camp, Emmanuel attempted to teach his fellow prisoners about dialectical materialism. In March 1946, he was finally released, but he found it too difficult to find work in Greece, so Emmanuel returned to the Congo.[2]
