Mark Joseph Carney (born March 16, 1965) is a Canadian politician serving as the 24th prime minister of Canada and leader of the Liberal Party since March 2025. Carney has never held elected office and was instead a banker, having previously served as the eighth governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, during the 2008 financial crisis, and the 120th governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020, during Brexit and the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the resignation of unpopular leader Justin Trudeau in January 2025, Carney became the new prime minister in March following a landslide victory of 85.9% in the leadership election against close friend Chrystia Freeland. Carney dishonestly sold himself as an outsider despite his close ties to the Liberal Party leadership and this perceived disconnect from Trudeau's leadership as well as the aggressive rhetoric of Donald Trump allowed the banker to gain popularity. In actuality Carney's policies do not vary much from his predecessor and Canada's support for neoliberalism, imperialism and Ukraine remains unchanged.[1]
