Huey Percy Newton (February 17, 1942 - August 22, 1989) was a Statesian revolutionary, communist, Black liberation theorist, and co-founder of the Black Panther Party (BPP). Together with Bobby Seale, Newton founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, California, in October 1966. Newton served as the organization's Minister of Defense and became one of the most prominent figures of the Black Power movement.[1]

The Black Panther Party combined armed self-defense against police violence with socialist political education and an extensive network of community survival programs, including free breakfasts, health clinics, food distribution, transportation assistance, legal aid, education, and sickle-cell anemia testing.[2]
