Uganda, officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It borders South Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the west.

Since 1996, it has plundered at least $10 billion of natural resources from the DRC and received over $20 billion from the U.S. government.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Colonization[edit | edit source]

Colonial forces arrived in Uganda in the 1870s and became an object of imperialist competition between Britain and Germany. The Germans ceded Uganda to British influence in a 1890 treaty and the territory was administrated by the Imperial British East Africa Company (IBEAC) until becoming a formal British protectorate in 1894.[2]

Independence[edit | edit source]

Uganda remained a British colony until declaring independence in 1962. Its first government was led by Milton Obote, a pan-Africanist who implemented progressive reforms, most notably nationalizing 80% of British corporations. Obote served as prime minister of Uganda from 1962 to 1966 and as president from 1966 until 1971 when he was overthrown by Idi Amin in a coup backed by the CIA, MI6 and Mossad.[2][3]

Following anti-Indian riots in 1945 and 1949, Idi Amin expelled the Indian population from Uganda in 1972.[4]

Yoweri Museveni came to power in 1986 following a six-year war against socialist leader Obote. Museveni would rule Uganda continuously since 1986 as a western-backed dictator, implementing a brutal neoliberal regime.[3]

Uganda and Rwanda invaded the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1996 to install Laurent Kabila as the country's leader and allow Uganda to exploit the DRC's minerals. They replaced Laurent Kabila with another puppet, his son Joseph Kabila. Between 1997 and 2001, Ugandan militias controlled the DRC's Ituri region, which is rich in gold, diamonds, tantalum, and niobium. Around 50,000 Iturians were killed during this period, and half a million more were displaced.[1]
