I expanded info about her early life, and her political career, focusing on showing her and her party's clear admiration for Mussolini. I also reordered some info into a newly created Early life section.

Giorgia Meloni (born 15 January 1977) is a far-right Italian politician who has served as the first female Prime Minister of Italy since 2022. Meloni has also served as president of the Brothers of Italy (Fdl) since 2014 and previously served as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party from 2020 to 2025. She also previously served as Minister for Youth Policies from 2008 to 2011 under Silvio Berlusconi.

As prime minister she has moderated her image as an overt fascist to appear more moderate whilst still pushing reactionary policies. Meloni has consistently attacked the judiciary, bourgeois democratic structures and the media in order to consolidate her power whilst passing repressive legislation on migration and LGBT rights. Western leaders have offered little criticism of her regime due to her support for NATO, imperialism in Ukraine and her assistance in deporting non-white people.[1]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Giorgia Meloni grew up in the working-class Garbatella district of Rome. In 1992, at the age of 15, she joined the Youth Front, the youth wing of the Italian Social Movement (MSI), a neo-fascist political party founded by supporters of Benito Mussolini's fascist regime after World War II.[2][3] As a youth activist, Meloni publicly praised Mussolini, describing him in 1996 as "a good politician, the best of the last 50 years."

Political career[edit | edit source]

In 2012, she founded the Brothers of Italy party.[3] Brothers of Italy continues to use the tricolor flame symbol it adopted in 2014, previously used by the fascist party MSI, after Meloni refused to change it. The tricolor flame is said to be inspired by Jean-Marie Le Pen’s fascist National Rally in France, and possibly represents Mussolini's tomb in Predappio, which still draws thousands of visitors annually despite the fascist regime's actions in World War II.[4]

She promoted the Great Replacement conspiracy theory in her 2021 autobiography.[3]

Many senior officials in Brothers of Italy, the party she leads, openly admire Mussolini and his fascist regime. Libero Quotidiano, a fascist newspaper run by a former spokesperson of Meloni's government, featured Mussolini on the cover and named him the "Man of the Year" in December 2024.[4][5]
