Iósif Vissariónovich Dzhugashvili (18 December 1878 – 5 March 1953), better known as Joseph Stalin, was a Georgian Marxist–Leninist revolutionary, political theorist, and the elected[1] leader of the Soviet Union from 3 April 1922 to 16 October 1952, serving several terms as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union during that time.

Stalin oversaw the period of collectivisation and industrialisation which transformed the USSR from an illiterate rural backwater to a socialist superpower by the late-1930s and early-1940s. Under Stalin's leadership, the USSR played a principal role in the defeat of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan during World War II.
