Frantz Fanon (July 20, 1925 – December 6, 1961) was a psychiatrist, anti-colonial political theorist, author, and revolutionary from the Caribbean island of Martinique. He is the author of various works including Black Skin, White Masks (1952) and The Wretched of the Earth (1961).

Born as a colonial French subject, he eventually travelled to France for his education in psychiatry.

In the latter portion of his life, he was involved with the Algerian National Liberation Front (French: Front de Libération Nationale; FLN) in the Algerian independence struggle against the French.[1] He also worked in Tunisia with Algerian independence forces, and served as the Ambassador to Ghana for the Provisional Algerian Government. He passed away in 1961, after being diagnosed with leukemia.[2]

Fanon's political thought deals heavily with the implications and consequences of colonization, focusing considerably on anti-colonial struggles of his time as well as on the effects of colonization on the human psyche.

In 1953, Fanon was named the Head of the Psychiatry Department of the Blida-Joinville Hospital in Algeria. There, via his patients, Fanon gained increased insight into the torture and brutality ongoing under French rule. In 1956, Fanon resigned from his position to struggle for Algerian independence.[2][3] He documented French atrocities for the French and Algerian media.[4] According to Fanon, the only way for anti-colonial governments to prevent military coups is to politically educate the army and create civilian militias.[5]

You look at a picture of a busy street in a strange country, and your glance travels from person to person. It notices their dress, the surrounding architecture, the poses they assume. And you might ask yourself if you could live in this place. This is a natural, basic reflex we all have. Each of us has conceived some particular kind of life as worthy of desire, and this conception has been moulded by the customs and traditions of our youth. We take our individual conceptions and transfer them upon those who live by other standards and have different ideals from our own. We imagine that they must be unhappy because they lack the comforts and conveniences which we have come to regard as necessities, or that they cannot be free because their daily life is not governed by the same social understandings and traditions as where we happen to live. But in this moment of judgment, few people are reflective. They do not turn the question back upon themselves and inquire what is the source of their own moral and aesthetic standards.

To understand what is really happening, it is necessary to strip away all ornament and look at the facts of human life without any preconceptions. Every civilization begins with the basic fact that we are animals living on a rock in space, with certain needs which are very much the same in all times and places. A certain amount of food is required for our bodies to work properly, and this is measured in terms of calories and protein. We need shelter from the weather so as not to die of cold at night. We need physical and psychological safety as we go about our lives. Above all, we need some means of production so that we can meet our fundamental needs. A society must produce food and goods that its citizens need, which, in turn, require agriculture, manufacture, mining, and all the other industries our modern world depends on. This is the material basis upon which everything else is built up. It must be secured first because nothing else can exist without it. Everything else, such as our laws, our art, and our religion, is an ornament which we have built upon this foundation.
