The New York Times (NYT) is a Statesian bourgeois newspaper. It has historically supported U.S. imperialism and far-right governments. Before publishing its articles, The New York Times sends them to the U.S. government for approval.[1]

It is a major mouthpiece for United States fascism and liberalism. A recent article published on 2 February 2024 and written by Thomas Friedman (a three-times Pulitzer winner) horrifically dehumanized the Palestinian people, in the mist of the Palestinian genocide and the other peoples of the middle east by comparing them to bugs. Per Ben Norton, "the NY Times is comparing victims of US-Israeli genocide and colonialism to insects. This is the contemporary equivalent of Nazi rhetoric that dehumanized their victims as cockroaches. Except now fascist ideology is so mainstream in the US, NYT columnist Thomas Friedman uses it."[2]

Criticism[edit | edit source]

Fascism[edit | edit source]

The New York Times praised Mussolini in an article from 1923.[3] Upon Hitler's release from Landsberg Prison in December 1924, it wrote that Hitler, "once the demi-god of reactionary extremists," had been "tamed," and he seemed a "sadder and wiser man [...] It was believed he would retire to private life and return to Austria."[4] In addition, The New York Times described the 1936 Summer Olympics hosted by Nazi Germany as "perfect in setting" and "the greatest sports event of all time."[5]

Imperialism[edit | edit source]

The New York Times has supported several right-wing CIA coups, including Iran in 1953, Brazil in 1964,[6] Chile in 1973,[7] Venezuela in 2002, and Bolivia in 2019.[6] It promoted NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia in 1993.[8] The NYT was arguing for a return to colonialism in 1993, less than two years after the Soviet Union and many of its socialist allies, which aided resistance against colonialism, had been overthrown.[9]

The New York Times has omitted US sabotage of Cuba to justify further hostile actions towards Cuba. Mauricio de Miranda Parrondo, a New York Times economist claimed, "the [Cuban] leadership prioritizes political control over the needs of the population. The Cuban economy has suffered greatly for it. The country is no longer capable of producing the basic goods it needs; today it imports most of the food it consumes, despite the fertility of its lands and its long agricultural tradition".[10]

Zionism[edit | edit source]

The New York Times has been and continues to push Zionism and cover for Zionist including settler violence and genocide. On settler violence, The New York Times , claimed " Violent attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians in the West Bank have intensified since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that set off the war in Gaza".[11] The article counts on government statements rather that give any further information on settler violence.

It also overlooks its own guidelines against bias to support Zionism and has numerous staffers with personal ties to the Zionist occupation including family members in the "Israeli" military.[12]

Racism[edit | edit source]

In a 2019 article, climate change denier Bret Stephens cited white nationalist and eugenicist Henry Harpending, who claimed that Jews have higher IQs because of their genes.[13]

In a 2025 article attempting to attack Zohran Mamdani, The New York Times cited the scientific racist Jordan "Crémieux" Lasker and attempted to obscure his racism from readers.[14][15]

Transphobia[edit | edit source]

The New York Times has pushed anti-trans bigotry from the top of the news organization including shut downs of internal discussion in regards to concerns of increasing conservative trans coverage and reporting. [16]
