The Spartacus League Uprising, also known as the January Uprising, was a large-scale armed insurrection that took place in Berlin, Germany, from January 5 to January 15, 1919. Led by the "Spartacus League" (the precursor to the Communist Party of Germany) and its radical left-wing supporters, the uprising aimed to overthrow the newly established Weimar Republic and establish a soviet-style socialist government. It was ultimately suppressed by the provisional government led by Friedrich Ebert and the Social Democratic Party, with direct paramilitary forces like the Freikorps. The leaders, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, were killed after its failure. This event marked the climax and endpoint of the German November Revolution, signifying the collapse of hopes for achieving socialism through parliamentary means in Germany.
